Letter of Credit Services in UAE for Importers and Exporters

When you buy goods from an overseas supplier or sell to a new international customer, both sides need clarity on how payment will be made. A letter of credit in the UAE can provide a bank undertaking to pay the seller when the documents stipulated in the credit are presented in compliance with its terms. It is a structured way to address payment risk in international trade, provided the wording and documentary process are managed carefully.

Skyway Corporate Services supports UAE businesses with LC requirements assessment, application preparation and practical coordination around bank and transaction documents. We help importers, exporters and trading companies understand what the bank is asking for and which information must be consistent before an LC is issued or documents are presented.

What Is a Letter of Credit and How Does It Work?

A documentary letter of credit, commonly called an LC, is an undertaking by an issuing bank in favour of a beneficiary. In a typical import transaction, the UAE buyer asks its bank to issue the credit in favour of an overseas seller. The credit sets out the amount, expiry, shipment conditions, required documents and method of payment. If the seller presents documents that comply with the credit and applicable rules, the relevant bank must honour according to those terms.

Many international documentary credits expressly incorporate the International Chamber of Commerce’s UCP 600 rules. UCP 600 distinguishes the underlying goods contract from the separate credit and explains that banks examine documents, not the physical condition or performance of the goods. Buyers therefore still need sound supplier due diligence, inspection arrangements and a clear sale contract.

A letter of credit is not the same as a cash loan, a guarantee of product quality or an automatic payment. The parties must agree workable terms, banks must accept the application, and the beneficiary must present complying documents within the required periods. Skyway helps companies prepare for those steps; it is not a bank and does not issue documentary credits itself.

How Skyway Supports Letter of Credit Services in the UAE

01

Import LC Application Support

For a UAE importer, a documentary LC may offer an alternative to paying the full purchase price in advance. Skyway helps assemble the underlying purchase order, commercial contract, pro forma invoice, supplier details, shipment dates, payment instructions and corporate documentation typically requested by the bank.

We also help identify potential mismatches before application: for example, a supplier’s invoice description that differs from the contract, an unrealistic latest shipment date or a transport-document requirement that is difficult for the freight forwarder to meet. The bank retains authority over the facility, credit limit, margin, security and issuance decision.

02

Export LC Advising and Documentation Support

UAE exporters may receive a letter of credit through an advising bank from an overseas buyer’s issuing bank. The advising bank checks the apparent authenticity of the credit and passes its contents to the beneficiary; advising alone is not an additional promise to pay.

Skyway helps exporters read the operative terms, coordinate with the shipping and commercial teams and prepare a document checklist based on the credit. Exporters should resolve problematic documentary conditions before shipping rather than assume the bank can ignore discrepancies later.

03

LC Confirmation Requests

Some exporters request a confirmed letter of credit where a second bank adds its own undertaking, in addition to the issuing bank’s undertaking, for a complying presentation. Confirmation can address particular issuing-bank or country risks but is not available for every credit and normally has a separate price.

We help companies understand what confirmation means, identify information a bank may request and coordinate a request where suitable. Confirmation is a credit decision by the confirming bank; it should never be presented as guaranteed simply because an LC has been advised.

04

LC Amendments and Term Reviews

Purchase quantities, vessel schedules, product descriptions and shipment dates sometimes change after a credit is issued. A formal LC amendment may be needed to align the credit with the revised commercial arrangement. Under UCP 600, amendments have defined acceptance rules; it is not safe to assume a proposed change is effective merely because the buyer requested it.

Skyway helps organise amendment instructions, compare proposed changes with the purchase contract and flag how an amendment could affect the beneficiary’s ability to present compliant documents.

05

Document Presentation and Discrepancy Prevention

Banks may examine a commercial invoice, transport document, insurance document, packing list, certificate of origin and other documents specified by the credit. The wording of the LC matters: even a commercially acceptable shipment can create a payment problem if a required document is missing or inconsistent.

We help businesses create a working checklist and coordinate corrections with their shipping agents or suppliers where permitted. The bank alone decides whether a presentation complies with the credit and applicable banking practice. We do not issue transport documents or certify shipment facts.

06

LC Discounting and Trade Finance Coordination

Exporters who hold eligible deferred-payment credits may ask a bank about discounting or negotiation to receive funds before the final payment date. This is a separate finance product and may depend on the issuing bank, the presentation, the exporter, the tenor and the financing institution’s appetite.

For broader funding options, review our trade finance solutions for UAE businesses. This page focuses specifically on documentary letters of credit rather than invoice finance, loans and guarantees generally.

Types of Letters of Credit Used in UAE Trade

LC typeTypical featureWhat to check
1Sight letter of creditPayment under the credit at sight against a complying presentationDocument requirements and available bank
2Usance / deferred-payment LCPayment is due at an agreed future dateTenor, maturity basis and potential financing cost
3Confirmed letter of creditA confirming bank adds its own undertakingAvailability, bank risk and confirmation charges
4Transferable letter of creditPermits transfer where the LC expressly states it is transferableTransfer conditions, parties and bank acceptance
5Revolving letter of creditCan replenish availability in the manner stated by its termsAmount, cycle, expiry and monitoring
6Back-to-back LC arrangementA separate LC may be supported by an underlying master LCDistinct bank credit decision and security needs
7Standby letter of creditCommonly secures an obligation rather than ordinary shipment paymentApplicable rules, demand conditions and underlying obligation

A sight LC and a usance LC are not different levels of seller protection by themselves; they describe when honour occurs. Similarly, confirmation is not automatically part of every advised LC. The most appropriate structure depends on the contract and bank acceptance. Some specialist structures are unavailable for certain businesses or trades.

Who Is Involved in a Letter of Credit Transaction?

Applicant (Usually the Importer)

The applicant asks the issuing bank to open the LC, normally on the basis of an underlying sales agreement. The applicant is responsible for providing accurate commercial information and meeting the issuing bank’s credit, reimbursement and security requirements.

Beneficiary (Usually the Exporter)

The beneficiary is the party in whose favour the LC is issued. It must examine the credit carefully and prepare the stipulated documents in the required form within the applicable time limits.

Issuing Bank

The issuing bank issues the documentary credit and, where its stated conditions and applicable rules are met, has the obligation to honour a complying presentation. The issuing bank may require an existing banking relationship, approved trade line, cash cover or other collateral.

Advising and Confirming Banks

An advising bank communicates a credit after satisfying itself of its apparent authenticity but does not, solely by advising, undertake to pay. A confirming bank adds its own undertaking when it agrees to confirm a credit. A nominated bank’s role and obligations depend on the terms of the LC and applicable rules.

Understanding these roles helps buyers and sellers avoid assuming that every bank involved carries the same payment obligation.

Step-by-Step: How to Arrange a Letter of Credit in the UAE

  1. 01
    Step 1

Agree Commercial Terms With the Counterparty

The importer and exporter agree what is being sold, the amount and currency, delivery terms, shipment window and method of payment. The contract should identify which documents can realistically be provided and how discrepancies or delays will be handled commercially.

  2. 02
    Step 2

Review the UAE Company’s Banking Position

The applicant checks whether its bank can consider the transaction and whether a trade facility, cash margin or security is needed. The bank may review the applicant’s licence, account activity, credit history, financial information and beneficial ownership.

  3. 03
    Step 3

Prepare the LC Application and Draft Terms

The importer prepares the bank’s LC application with beneficiary details, value, expiry, latest shipment date, payment availability, documentary conditions and other required information. Skyway helps organise commercial and corporate documents for review and flag unclear wording.

  4. 04
    Step 4

    Bank Review and LC Issuance

Only the issuing bank can decide whether the LC will be issued. The operative credit may be transmitted through secure banking channels to the advising bank. Business teams should verify the final issued wording rather than rely only on a draft or supplier quotation.

  5. 05
    Step 5

Beneficiary Reviews the Credit Before Shipping

The seller checks whether the LC reflects the sales contract and whether each document can be produced correctly. If there is a problem, the parties should seek an appropriate amendment before shipment. Shipping first and resolving incompatible terms later can create avoidable payment risk.

  6. 06
    Step 6

    Shipment and Documentary Presentation

The exporter ships in accordance with the agreed trade terms and gathers the documents required by the LC. The presenter sends the documents to the bank within the stated time frame. Document names, transport dates, amounts, parties and goods descriptions require careful cross-checking.

  7. 07
    Step 7

Examination, Honour and Release of Documents

Banks examine the documents against the credit and applicable banking rules. A complying presentation triggers the payment obligation according to the credit’s availability. Where discrepancies exist, the bank may refuse the presentation or seek an applicant waiver subject to the applicable procedures. The importer then handles document release and cargo clearance under the banking and shipping arrangements.

Letter of Credit Documentation Checklist

A typical LC transaction involves both a bank application file and a shipment presentation file. The documents below are examples, not a universal list. The actual wording of the LC determines the required presentation.

Documents Often Needed for the Bank Application

  • Trade licence and company incorporation documents, as applicable
  • Ownership and ultimate beneficial owner details, ID documents and authorised-signatory evidence
  • Existing corporate account information, financial statements or supporting financial records where requested
  • Purchase agreement, supplier quotation or pro forma invoice and beneficiary bank details
  • Shipment timetable, trade route, source of funds and explanation of underlying business activity
  • Facility application, collateral or margin information as required by the bank

Documents Commonly Required Under the LC

  • Commercial invoice prepared in accordance with the credit requirements
  • Bill of lading, air waybill or other stipulated transport document
  • Packing list or weight list where required
  • Certificate of origin, inspection certificate or product-specific documents when stipulated
  • Insurance document when required by the trade terms and LC wording
  • Draft or beneficiary certificate where the credit calls for one

Not every LC requires every document listed above. Requiring unnecessary certificates increases the opportunity for discrepancies and may create a document that the seller cannot realistically obtain. A practical LC should be precise without becoming unworkable.

Common LC Discrepancies and How to Reduce Them

Inconsistent Product or Invoice Details

A mismatch between the LC’s goods description, the invoice and other documents may raise examination questions. Draft the credit from an agreed transaction description and review the final invoice before presentation.

Shipping Dates and Expiry Conflicts

The latest shipment date, expiry date, presentation period and cargo timetable must work together. A shipment that occurs late or a presentation made after expiry can make otherwise correct documents unusable for the LC.

Transport Document Problems

A transport document may show the wrong consignor, date, routing, port or other information, or may not meet the type specified in the credit. Coordinating the LC requirements with a freight forwarder before dispatch helps avoid surprises.

Missing or Incompatible Insurance Documents

Where insurance is required, check the currency, amount, covered risks, effective date and documentary form specified in the credit. An insurance certificate supplied after shipment may not solve a requirement that should have been planned earlier.

Amendments That Were Not Accepted

The buyer may ask a bank to amend the LC, but the exporter must confirm whether the amendment has been accepted and whether the operative conditions have changed. Keep a clear record of the original credit and all amendments to avoid presenting against mixed versions.

ICC’s UCP 600 and International Standard Banking Practice (ISBP 821) provide important guidance on documentary examination, but a company’s working checklist should still be built around its actual LC and supporting contract.

Who Can Apply for Letter of Credit Services in the UAE?

  • UAE mainland companies and eligible free zone companies engaged in legitimate trade may request LC-related services from suitable banks. The bank’s assessment may include the validity of the company’s licence, authorised signatories, UBO information, source of funds, transaction counterparties, goods, shipment routes and creditworthiness.

  • Import LC issuance commonly requires the applicant to satisfy the issuing bank’s financial and collateral policy. Export LC advising can involve a different banking process because the credit originates from the overseas buyer’s bank. Confirmation and discounting require their own bank decisions and may not be offered on every transaction.

  • A company that does not yet have a suitable corporate banking relationship can seek business bank account opening support. For a free zone business, our free zone company banking guidance explains related onboarding considerations.

Letter of Credit Fees and Bank Charges in UAE

The overall cost of an LC depends on transaction size, validity, payment tenor, applicant risk, collateral, bank tariff and the involvement of other institutions. Charges may include issuance commission, advising, confirmation, amendment, document examination, courier or SWIFT messaging, reimbursement and foreign-bank fees. Deferred-payment or discounting arrangements may carry financing charges as well.

No single fee schedule applies to every UAE bank or documentary credit. Ask the relevant bank for a written breakdown showing which party pays each charge. The purchase contract and LC wording should be consistent about bank charges; ambiguity can lead to disputes between the buyer and seller.

Skyway helps businesses identify the right pricing questions to ask and compare practical conditions, but it cannot set the bank’s tariffs or guarantee that a particular instrument will be issued.

Letter of Credit vs Bank Guarantee vs Documentary Collection

Documentary LC

Main purpose
Supports payment for trade documents under an LC
Payment trigger / obligation
Complying documentary presentation under credit terms

Bank guarantee

Main purpose
Secures a stated contractual or financial obligation
Payment trigger / obligation
Compliant demand under the guarantee’s text and applicable rules

Documentary collection

Main purpose
Banks handle documents and collection instructions
Payment trigger / obligation
Buyer pays or accepts as instructed; standard bank payment promise is absent

This distinction matters for both buyer and seller. A supplier requesting an LC may not be satisfied with a collection. A contractor requiring a performance guarantee may need an entirely different undertaking. Our bank guarantee services in UAE page covers the latter instrument in greater depth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Letters of Credit in UAE

01What is a letter of credit in the UAE?

A letter of credit is a bank undertaking to honour a documentary presentation that complies with the credit’s terms and applicable rules. It is commonly used in import and export transactions to provide structured payment assurance between trading parties.

03Can a UAE free zone company use a letter of credit?

Potentially. Eligibility depends on the bank’s policy, the company’s authorised activity, business substance, account relationship, shareholders and actual trade transaction. A valid free zone licence does not automatically provide an LC facility.

05Is a confirmed LC safer for an exporter?

A confirmed LC adds a second bank’s undertaking when that bank agrees to confirm the credit. It may address certain issuing-bank or country risks, but confirmation is not automatic and does not replace the exporter’s obligation to make a complying presentation.

07What happens when LC documents have discrepancies?

The examining bank may refuse the presentation according to the credit and applicable rules. The issuing bank might seek a waiver from the applicant, but a waiver cannot be assumed or forced. The parties should address documentary issues as early as possible.

09What are UCP 600 and ISBP 821?

UCP 600 is the ICC’s set of rules for documentary credits where the credit expressly makes them applicable. ISBP 821 is the ICC’s guidance on standard banking practice for examining documents under UCP 600; it supports practical application of the rules rather than replacing them.

11Can an exporter get early payment under a deferred-payment LC?

Some banks offer discounting or negotiation for eligible transactions, subject to the LC, issuing-bank risk, presentation status and bank approval. It is a separate financing arrangement and may have fees or recourse conditions.

02How do I open an import letter of credit in Dubai?

Agree the sale and shipment terms, check whether your UAE bank can consider the transaction, prepare the bank’s LC application and required company documents, and review the proposed credit text. The bank decides whether to issue the LC and what security is required.

04What is the difference between a sight LC and a usance LC?

A sight LC provides for payment at sight against a complying presentation. A usance or deferred-payment LC sets payment for a specified future time under the credit terms. Both require close attention to document and maturity conditions.

06Does the bank inspect goods before paying under an LC?

Not as part of its ordinary UCP 600 document examination. Banks deal with documents, not physical goods or contract performance. Importers should separately manage supplier due diligence, inspection and quality provisions in their commercial contract.

08Which documents are usually required for an LC?

Commercial invoices and transport documents are common. The credit may also require packing lists, certificates of origin, insurance documents or inspection certificates. The actual LC governs the list and the precise form of each document.

10Can an LC be amended after issuance?

Yes, amendments may be possible through the banks, but the effect of a change depends on the governing rules and the required parties’ acceptance. Do not rely on a revised purchase order alone to alter the operative LC.

12Can Skyway issue an LC or guarantee bank approval?

No. Skyway assists with LC requirements, documentation and application coordination. An authorised bank issues or confirms a documentary credit and determines credit limits, collateral, charges, approval and settlement obligations.

Why Businesses Seek Skyway’s LC Support

A letter of credit can appear straightforward until the company has to translate a commercial contract into bank-ready conditions. Product details, shipping milestones, documents, currencies and parties must all align. Skyway focuses on that practical coordination, helping business owners communicate clearly with their bank, supplier and logistics team.

We help explain the LC process in business language, prepare coherent files for application review, identify obvious documentary gaps and organise responses where terms need clarification. Our role is advisory and administrative; the issuing, confirming or negotiating bank remains responsible for regulated financial decisions and document examination.

Skyway also assists businesses across banking and finance services UAE, making it easier to address adjacent needs such as trade facility preparation or business account documentation through the same corporate services team.
